Propecia is the trade name of the drug. The drug itself is called finasteride. Propecia has only been approved by the FDA for men. Women and children should not use Propecia. Male hair loss is typically caused by an overproduction of testosterone, and in particular dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Propecia has the unique function of decreasing the amount of DHT in your body. By lowering the amount of DHT in your body, your hair do not fall out so fast. Propecia is available by prescription only in the US. Your doctor will write a prescription for you and you can get it at your local pharmacy. However, you might find it cheaper online.
