What Can The American Hair Loss Council Do For You?
The American Hair Loss Council (AHLC) is a small organization compared to its peer resources within medical hair loss rescources.
The AHLC has a small section on what causes hair loss and hair loss solutions. But the most useful feature is a search function of its members. However, it is only possible to search by geographical location.
Propecia
Propecia is one of two drugs that has been approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) (the other being Rogaine).
Propecia is the trade name of the drug. The drug itself is called finasteride. Propecia has only been approved by the FDA for men. Women and children should not use Propecia.
Male hair loss is typically caused by an overproduction of testosterone, and in particular dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Propecia has the unique function of decreasing the amount of DHT in your body. By lowering the amount of DHT in your body, your hair do not fall out so fast.
Propecia is available by prescription only in the US. Your doctor will write a prescription for you and you can get it at your local pharmacy. However, you might find it cheaper online.
The only major side effect reported with the use of Propecia is the possible loss of your libido. If that turns you off Propecia, so to speak, there is always Rogaine.
