UHLO comment: Tight hair styles and hair pulling can cause hair loss Avoid them.

Hair Pulling

Curlers that are fitted too tightly can pull out hair. This has the same effect as the disease where people pull out hair own hair, which can result in permanently thinned areas on the scalp, also called Traction Alopecia.

Traction Alopecia has many names, but some of the more commonly used are anxiety hair pulling, hair pulling addiction, hair pulling syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder hair pulling, trich hair pulling or impulse control disorder.

Tight Hair Styles

The easy solution is to find a hairstyle that is loose and easy to maintain. You can discuss options and styling techniques with your hairdresser. These can also minimize both the look and effects of hair loss.

Generally, short hairstyles minimizes the look of hair loss. For women, hair extensions are another good alternative to mask hair loss. However, hair extensions are not cheap.

Try and avoid tight hairstyles, including braids, buns, cornrows, pigtails or ponytails. If you do wear one of these hair styles, try and change your hair so the hair style puts as little pressure and stress on your scalp and hair as possible.

Also try to change the hair style, or the way you set your hair. Wearing the same hair style for years that pulls on the hair in the same way and direction can cause hair loss, known as Traction Alopecia.

For hair accessories, like clips, hairpins and rubber bands, choose the smoothes one you can find. Hair accessories worn too tightly can break your hair.

A good alternative to rubber bands are fabric scrunchies, as these hold the hair more loosely. Also, try not to wear them in the same place every day, but alter their positions.
