Mens Hair Loss

Mens hair loss is widespread in the United States. It does not only affect men nearing the retirement age, although the older a person get, the larger is the risk of losing your hair. It also affects young men as young as in their teens.

More than 95% of the hair loss in men in the United States is due to Androgenetic Alopecia (male-pattern baldness).

Mens hair loss is still today a taboo subject today, which makes it difficult for hair loss sufferers to talk about hair loss and gain knowledge about their options.

Hair loss can cause huge emotional strain and even depression for hair loss sufferers. It can greatly affect the life quality and self-esteem of hair loss sufferers as well as their relationship to women.

The Understand Hair Loss Organization tries to help hair loss sufferers to expand their knowledge via our website. Our knowledge and resources are anonymous, objective, comprehensive and free. If you are not able to get all your questions answered here, feel free to contact us and we will try to help you as much as we can.

We recommend you use several sources for your research and do not rely just on one resource. Especially, be aware of advertising campaigns, yellow pages ads etc. There are literally hundreds of hair products and services being marketed to hair loss sufferers. Further, before you decide on any course of action you should see a dermatologist and have your scalp examined. This is typically done with a densitometer, which is a kind of magnifying glass. This will access the health of your hair follicles and lead the way for the recommended treatment option.

A scalp biopsy is only necessary to access if there should be traces of poison in your scalp. This is normally not needed, whereas the examination with a densitometer should be a must. If your dermatologist does not use or recommend the use of a densitometer you should change your dermatologist.

Although research in menŐs hair loss is still increasing, there are today only two products that have been approved by the FDA to treat menŐs hair loss. These are

- Finasteride (product name: Propecia and Proscar)
- Minoxidil (product name: Rogaine, Regaine and others)

Finasteride has shown to be more effective to treat hair loss then Minoxidil, however, if Finasteride does not stop your hair loss, Minoxidil is a viable option.
