There is no scientific evidence that hair dryers causes thinning hair. However, if you dry your hair with too hot hair, too close or for too long, it may make your hair fragile and brittle, and in the worst instance, break it and cause lasting damage

What can you do to prevent this?

The best thing is to allow your hair to air-dry naturally as frequently as possible. Then you can brush it and style it when it is almost dry.  This provide the best look for the hair with the least damage to the hair follicles. However, if you do need to dry it with a hair dryer, then you should consider the following.

When choosing your hair dryer, ensure that it has a temperature control button. This is the most important feature of a hair dryer so you can control the temperature at which you dry your hair.

The higher the heat from the hair dryer, the longer you dry it and the closer it is to the hair, the more damage it can do to your hair.

When your hair is soaking wet from washing it, you should never dry it. First let it dry gently with a towel wrapped around your head or pad it gently. Afterwards you can start blow dry your hair at a low warm setting keeping the hair dryer at least 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) away from your hair.

The hair is the weakest and most vunerable to brakeage when it is wet.  By taking these precautions you will give your hair the best chances to stay healthy and look great.

Other Hair Heating Devices

High heat on your hair can damage it, and in and in the worst instance, break it and cause lasting damage.

Avoid to the greatest extent possible other hair heating devices such as hair strengtheners, flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers. And if you have to use them, try to use them for the shortest time possible and at the lowest heat possible.

Tight curlers can result in permanently thinned areas on the head, and in the worst case, Traction Alopecia.
