State Medical Boards
An Often Overlooked Vital Resource

State medical boards are a vital but often overlooked resource when looking into a potential hair loss transplant or restoration. A board certification check should be part of your selection criteria. They can give your hair loss surgeon, dermatolog or other doctor, an official health check! State Medical Boards include the Georgia State Medical Board, the New York State Medical Board and the Ohio State Medical Board.

Federation of State Medical Boards

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) was founded in 1912, but its roots go back to 1892. The FSMB is the official authority for medical regulation in the US.

The FSMB states:

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) is a national non-profit organization representing the 70 medical and osteopathic boards of the United States and its territories. The FSMB leads by promoting excellence in medical practice, licensure, and regulation as the national resource and voice on behalf of state medical and osteopathic boards in their protection of the public.

What Is a State Medical Board?

A state medical board is a state agency that holds both the obligation and the power to regulate and license medical doctors within the state. It investigates complaints from patients and disciplines doctors who break the law.

Georgia State Medical Board

The mission of the different state medical boards are broadly similar, and the below quote from the California State Medical Boards sums their mission up very well:

The mission of the Medical Board is to protect health care consumers through the proper licensing and regulation of physicians and surgeons and certain allied health care professions and through the vigorous, objective enforcement of the Medical Practice Act, and, to promote access to quality medical care through the Board's licensing and regulatory functions.

State Medical Licensing Boards Disciplinary Actions

Unfortunately, it is not a rare occasion when a state medical licensing board issues a doctor with a disciplinary action.

The State Medical Boards issued in excess of 5,700 disciplinary actions against physicians in 2009 (the latest public figures). The development of disciplinary actions against physicians is shown in the below figure.
