Bases for wigs and hair pieces

The base is what the hairs are attached to in wigs or head pieces. They are primarily made from either meshes or polymers (or some use a combination of the two).

Mesh fabrics are usually made from polyester or nylon (or a combination or the two). They typically make the fine hairline, and with more expensive hair replacements, they are used for the entire base.

A base made from mesh fabric gives a more natural look and feel, it is very light, cools the head and is comfortable to wear. However, they are more expensive than polymer hair bases. Also, mesh reacts with body sweat, which means that the base will not last as long as a polymer base and will have to be replaced more often.

Polymers are made of polyurethane or silicone and give the base the look of your own scalp. These hair replacement bases are more durable than their mesh counterparts, are more easy to attach and can be significantly cheaper. However, in warmer climates, they can be very hot and uncomfortable to wear, and, if not made properly, can look artificial.

Todays high quality units look so realistic that you can show your artificial hairline and even comb your hair back.
