Womens Hair Loss
Hair loss is also very much a womens disease. Over 33% of all
hair loss in the United States affects women. It is generally
accepted that men lose hair, however, the same perception certainly
do not exists for women. It can be very difficult for women with
hair loss to cope with their change in appearance.
Androgenetic
Alopecia, also known as female pattern baldness, is by far the
most common reason for female hair loss. Female-pattern baldness
can be passed down genetically from mother to daughter.
Womens hair loss is much more a taboo subject than mens hair
loss. This makes it extra hard for women to discuss their condition
with friends and seek advice. Also, almost 100% of women hair loss
suffers, whereas men can generally choose to either suffer or live
with their hair loss. Female hair loss sufferers are subject to
more social and emotional concerns, compared to the male hair loss
sufferers.
Hair loss for women can cause huge emotional strain and even
depression for hair loss sufferers. It can greatly affect the life
quality and self-esteem of hair loss sufferers as well as their
relationship to men.
Loss of hair can be due to pregnancy
(Postpartum Care), the
menopause, as well as any of the general hair
loss diseases there exists today.
Other reason for womens hair loss can be due to any medication
that you are taking, which will affect your hormone balance. This
is especially true for oral contraceptives (the pill). If you
believe this is the case you should ask your doctor for a pill with
a low androgen index, or in extreme cases, use other non-hormone
forms of birth control.

Further, before you decide on any course of action you should
see a dermatologist and have your scalp examined. This examination
should be thorough and we recommend that the following tests be
done:
- Complete Blood count
- Densitometry test
- Hair pull
- Hormone level tests
- Scalp biopsy
This should lead the way for the recommended treatment option.
If your dermatologist does not suggest this wide array of
examinations you should change your dermatologist.
There is hardly any research today on womens hair loss.
Research in mens hair loss is still in its infancy, and the only
product today available for women, is a result of research for mens
hair loss. This is
- Minoxidil
(product name: Rogaine, Regaine and others)
Minoxidil seems to be more effective for women than for men.
Only the 2% solution has been approved by the FDA for women,
however, closely monitored test with the 5% solution have shown
some promising results.
